Portrait of A Young Lady

Portrait of a beautiful young lady with raven hair styled in a loose ponytail with ribbon, wearing a sheer white one strapped off the shoulder gown and blue wrap. Signed  top left corner J (Jules Frederic) Ballavoine (1855 - 1901). 

Paris born Ballavoine received his formal art training at L'Ecole de Beaux-Arts under the historical painter Isidore Alexandre Augustin Pils (1813 -1875). He debuted at the Paris Salon of 1877. This romantic genre painter exhibited at the Salon throughout his career.  At the 1886 Paris Salon, he was awarded a medal for 'La seance interrompue'. Throughout his career he received critical acclaim for his delicate still life work, portraits, Paris street scenes and historical genre paintings. He became best known for his portraits of young women often depicted in landscapes. The young woman in this portrait is thought to be his daughter.
